As medical meetings go, this last one was one of the best. The ASLMS, American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, annual meeting started with a special course on laser complication taught by the best and most experienced laser surgeons. Since the majority of the presenters are derms, I had the good luck of being exposed to their extensive contribution to laser surgery. They are the ones who are in the trenches doing the studies and sharing the information. They are the mentors of my interest, then passion, for lasers. They also are the purveyors of the fact that this technology, while celebrating 50 years of existence, is still evolving in small steps. The tenor of their message was: be cautious, do no harm, take the promotional material with a grain of salt, remember your basic training in skin and its responses, look for evidence based results, don’t over promise results, tattoos are much harder to remove than obtain, home devices are safe only IF you follow the exact instructions, the evolution of lasers is amazing and on the shoulders of many tenacious people.
